8 Great Benefits of Drinking Cucumber Water (+5 Recipes)

Cucumber water is one drink that you’ll want to consider the next time you’re feeling thirsty. It not only helps genuinely hydrate the body, it can help you feel better overall, and even look better. Here are all of the benefits you’ll reap, and some recipes to help you along.

You would be surprised at the many health benefits of drinking cucumber water. It can lower your blood pressure, curb your appetite and reduce the risk for cancer. Learn more here and get 5 delicious cucumber water recipes.

1. Helps Hydrate You

When you meet your specific water needs you’ll enjoy the benefits of staying hydrated, like maintaining the right body temperature, helping your cardiovascular system, and assisting in the cleansing of toxins. You’ll have more energy and help each of your organs do its job better when they’re getting enough water. Cucumber water adds that little something extra to regular water that makes you more likely to drink it more often, helping you stay hydrated each day. For the best results make sure you are using purified or spring water to avoid the intake of contaminants.

2. Provides Extra Vitamins and Minerals

cucumberWater is vital to the body, but by itself it’s not a great source of vitamins. When you add in cucumbers you’ll be adding in vitamins and minerals that will help supplement the rest of your diet. Many cucumber water recipes also add in fruit, so you’ll be getting antioxidants and extra vitamins from those, like Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Since these vitamins are coming from whole food sources and not synthetic vitamins they’ll be better absorbed and utilized by the body than if you were to get them from waters marketed as containing added vitamins.

3. Brings Down Blood Pressure

Keeping your blood pressure in check is important because it will help keep you away from debilitating diseases like stroke, heart attack, kidney disease, or vision loss. By drinking cucumber water you’re staying hydrated, and helping your blood pressure thanks to the 4% DV of potassium cucumbers contain.

Since they’re essentially free of sodium you’ll get the maximum benefit of this important mineral if high blood pressure is a concern. Just be sure not to go overboard with your water intake, you’re looking for the Goldilocks amount of “just right”.

4. Curbs Appetite

Drinking a glass of cucumber water when you’re hungry can help you make it until your next meal if it’s not quite mealtime. Eating when you’re not actually hungry can lead to weight gain, sluggishness, and can throw you off your natural eating cycle. When you feel hunger coming on before it’s time to eat again, see if you’re just thirsty. Thirst and hunger use the same signal, and drinking cucumber water can help determine if it’s really hunger that you’re dealing with. Saving yourself from just a few unwarranted meals a week can be a big boost to your health.

5. Soothes the Skin

cucumber for skinStaying hydrated will help your skin stay supple and smooth, and adding in cucumbers to your water intake means you’re getting extra nutrients that helps even more. Cucumbers contain silica, which provides extra benefits to the skin. You can also use the cucumbers after you’ve finished the cucumber water. They’re great for helping to calm irritation caused by acne or other blemishes. You’ll be helping your skin from the inside, as well as topically when you add cucumber water to your skin care routine.

6. Helps Your Muscles

Whether or not you’re trying to put on muscle, helping your muscles stay strong is a good idea. The same silica in cucumbers that helps the skin, also helps your muscle tissues healthy. It’s a great choice if you’ve added a strength training regimen to your healthy lifestyle, or if you want to make sure that your muscles have all of the nutrients needed to function at their best. A daily glass of cucumber water makes a great contribution to the overall health of your muscles, and your body in general.

7. It Has Antioxidant/Detoxing Properties

Use cucumber water during a detox program and you’ll be helping the body out even more. It contains antioxidants that will help battle free radicals, and helps the body flush out built-up toxins thanks to its hydrating effect. Detoxing the body doesn’t have to be a one time or once a year event, you can help your body stay clean with daily attention to the foods that you’re taking in, as well as avoiding foods that are known as being toxic to the body. This sort of regular maintenance keeps you feeling great all year long.

8. Could Have Anti-Cancer Benefits

Cucumbers have shown promise for their anti-cancer properties, and when you use them as part of an overall healthy lifestyle, you’ll be helping to avoid this disease. Of course they aren’t powerful enough by themselves to ward off cancer, but as part of a broader approach at a healthy lifestyle it makes sense to stay hydrated with cucumber water. You’ll be taking in plenty of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients like the cucurbitacins found in cucumbers giving you a better chance at staying healthy long-term.

5 Cucumber Water Recipes

Lemon Cucumber Mint Water

Cucumbers and lemons go well together, and in this recipe they’ve included the cooling effect of fresh mint to the water so you’re getting several tastes competing for your attention. Lemons themselves are high in Vitamin C, and since you’re unlikely to eat lemons the way you’d eat an orange, drinking this lemon cucumber concoction is a great way to top up on this immune-boosting vitamin. Mint is also a rich source of Vitamin C, as well as important minerals like calcium and magnesium. Consider adding the mint to a soup or smoothie after you’ve finished the water, as it’s an excellent source of fiber.

cucumber herb infused water

Cucumber Herb-Infused Water

When you add in herbs to regular cucumber water you’re upping the flavor profile and also getting the nutrients each herb provides. This recipe goes all out and adds in three different herbs to get the flavor just right. At the same time you’re getting the vitamins and minerals from these herbs. Rosemary is a great source of iron, calcium, and potassium, and thyme can take care of your Vitamin C needs for the day all by itself. You’re also getting additional minerals from the mint, and the vitamins from the lemon. And don’t forget the goodness of cucumbers. That’s a packed glass of water!

Springtime Strawberry Cucumber Water

You don’t have to wait till spring to make this springtime strawberry water featuring plenty of cucumber goodness. The lemon, cucumber, and strawberries make a nice trio of flavors and work well together. There’s also your choice of herbs, and they recommend either mint or basil so you can tailor this to your particular palate. The strawberries will infuse the water with additional vitamins that cucumbers don’t have a ton of, namely Vitamin C. If it happens to be spring this makes a great water to drink to help the body rid itself of any toxins stored up from a long winter.

cucumber and basil water

Cucumber and Basil Water

The great part about making this cucumber and basil water is that you’re getting the tasty flavor of basil as well as the extra antioxidants it provides. That’s right, basil just doesn’t pack extra taste into the water, it’s also a nutrient powerhouse with the amount of Vitamin A it has. The Vitamin A gets turned into beta-Carotene in the body and has a strong antioxidant effect on the body, going to work on free radicals and helping you feel better. Contrary to popular belief, beta-Carotene helps with more than just your eyes. It helps the immune system and can even act as an anti-cancer agent.

Refreshing Fruit Water

Feeling parched is not in the cards when you make up a batch of this fruit water. But don’t let the title fool you, it’s packing more than just fruit and includes several slices of cucumber. Blueberries and strawberries give you a boost of antioxidants, and cucumber provides minerals and additional antioxidants that will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated and ready to take on the rest of your day. When compared to other drinks marketed as energy drinks you’re much better going with an all-natural option that leaves you feeling good with no crash later.

Hello. I’m getting to know your blog and I really appreciate the Detoxifying Teas post. As for this post its interesting to learn about the different properties of cucumber. I like lemon water myself. I’d probably have to sweeten my cucumber water, I just wasn’t feeling it.

I was wondering if you had anything to share in the way of eating for hormonal balance. Or is eating to detoxify your body already going to cover hormonal balance?

    • Judi says:

Check out Sophie Uliano recipes online. She has a recipe for a hormone balancing smoothie. I have not tried it yet, but plan to. I have just come across her site and plan to try some of her recipes.

  3. Cam says:

What do you do with the cukes and fruits after drinking the water? Wouldn’t it be better to put everything in ninja blender and consumer it all vs just drinking the water?

    • Ethel says:

I have been doing cucumbers and lemon waters for a few months now! 1 lemon half cucumber in large mason jar with water. Also have added table spoon of organic maple syrup. Drink with a straw. once water is gone I refill with more water and put in fridge until im ready to have another one. The veggies stay good in same mason jar for three days. Then you make it again. Im down two pants sizes no exercising. I drink 2 a day and up to three on weekends. Its easy to drink fast with a straw. Plus I love it and what the results are. Good luck!

    • Barbara says:

Wondering the same thing myself, thought it a waste and considered chewing them up when the water was gone.?

I have been drinking cucumber water since last night. I couldn’t stop drinking it today. I felt like I was hyper from a burst of energy and wondered if the water caused it. Around this time of day (after 7 pm), I am ready for bed. I have energy. I just read that cucumber water will rejuvenate you! I believe!

  5. Monica says:

How far ahead can I make the cucumber water? Does it lose its effectiveness if made and then refrigerated for work in the morning?

    • Kelsey says:

No, that actually allows more time for the nutrients to get “pulled” from the cucumbers and released into the water. Plus it will have more flavor!

I drink two litres a day of Cucumber, mint, lemon grass, lemon and or lime and lime leaves. I have no problem drinking water like that as opposed to just normal water … I refill when I am done and get one more bottle out of it and it is usually made for me the night before I drink it to marinate and get the full flavor out of it…. I even have my staff drinking it now … have banned all sodas in the workplace.

  25. RobbieD says:

What complicated nonsense if one can simply eat a cucumber.

    • Brig says:

Complicated? Chopping up a cucumber and throwing into water? Do you even lift, bro?

Besides, it’s clearly stated that this is used a substitute in place of just water alone. An idea that’s not all that far removed from drinking a glass of orange juice instead of y’know, eating a bowl of oranges.

      • Debbie says:

It’s very easy to make, plus it tastes amazing. I made a batch 2 days ago, and we all love it and it’s a great way to get more liquid in your body, not to mention all the health benefits.

  26. Courtney Ellis says:

Weight loss and being healthy should never be about fads and special drinks, as I see all these people drinking water with cucumbers and limes, lemons, mints and what have you. How about simply eating properly, drinking proper amounts of water, and coming up with a proper exercise proper (one you can successfully follow) and quite following these fads that may or may not work. Take a look around your work place if you work and get rid or avoid the stuff that may not be good for you. Being healthy is a lifestyle and you can’t hope that throwing cucumbers in a glass of the oldest and most complete weight loss and detoxification drink, now sure the addition of fruit and vegetables to water is nice but guess what gang; this is nothing new.

    • CatM says:

There’s always one. You could have voiced this in a nice way, but you felt the need to belittle people who might be looking for genuinely good tips. A lot of people do not drink enough water, and a method like this can increase their likelihood of getting more water each day, as well as getting a little more of their essential nutrients.

It is true that people should be cautioned about fads, but the truth is, most people reading this are not stupid. They may bounce between diets and exercise, but that can be down to a lot more than just wanting to try silly fads. The article does not purport anything about complete weight loss and detoxification. It just demonstrates how you can help yourself out a bit, and make it easier to do so.

This comes from someone who runs, does yoga, goes to the gym, eats well and takes care of herself. Although I do drink cucumber water when the mood strikes, I got some nice ideas from here.

And ‘This is nothing new’ – everything is new the first time you hear about it.

I’m tired of seeing comments like this where someone has to sit on the healthy high horse and lecture others. Be constructive and educating if you have the knowledge, but be nice and realise that not everybody is super knowledgeable about how to adopt healthy habits and can benefit from these kinds of posts.

      • Linda says:

Thank you. Well said and I totally agree!

      • Mary Eaton says:

Thank you so much for your response CatM. And I do appreciate these tips because I am one who needs to consume more water. Asthma medicine destroyed my taste for plain water.

      • Lynn says:

        Well said, Thank you.
I’ve tried the cucumber water a year ago. my daughter didn’t like drinkn water, so I tried this on her now she can’t go without it, she makes her own cucumber water w fresh fruits. my husband works in the hot fields of Texas as a Surveyor and drinkn plain water dont put a dent into quenching his thirst , so I made a gallon of this cucumber water and he’s more energetic and hydrated, he snacks on the cucumber slices during the day. he said this totally keeps him hydrated thru out the day. so now my daughter makes his cucumber n fruit water for him and he loves his flavored water, I LOVE it also.

      • Candice says:

Well said and I 100% agree. People just don’t know how to commicate efficiently anymore…at least when online it seems. If one is really trying to genuinely educate and help people they would do it in a way that doesn’t come across as condescending or like everyone less informed are complete imbeciles. I love fruit infused waters bc I know I’m not disciplined enough to drink plain water throughout the day and the taste of the mixtures helps me intake more water than I ever have in the past. I appreciate sites like this for people like me who may need a few “cheat sheets” to jumpstart healthier living☺️

      • Cheryl says:

For years I have “downed” many a gallon of plain water, as I do not like the taste of lemon. Putting cucumber slices in the water is a new idea to me and I intend to try it. I just hope it won’t be gassy! Again, I am thankful for your response as nobody likes to feel stupid and put in their place – when it was not even called for! A person does not have to take offense to someone’s opinion; therefore, I choose not to do so now!

    • Vermelle walker says:

Please don’t rain on others parade. If what you do works for you, fine, so give others a chance to experiment for themselves. Nothing defeats a failure but a try and I believe from experimenting and the comments, its working

  27. I drink my waters, cucumber and mint or cucumber and thyme, instead of refilling I then eat the fruit and herb, also I do watermelon and mint and blackberry and sage and eat it after drinking the water. Is that good to do?

  28. Maggie says:

I’m a witness i’ve been drinking cucumber water for over a year now and i see the effect it gives also its refreshing to drink

  29. ShoniaP says:

Very well said CatM! The reason I’m looking for cucumber water ideas is because our garden is producing at a very fast pace right now. We have been eating them daily for 3 wks. and we can’t keep up lol. Sometimes when picking we may miss one and they end up larger than the ones we like for eating. Most people don’t care for the large seeds inside. I thought this would be a good way to use these larger cukes instead of tossing them. Waste not want not so to speak…all the possible benefits are just a bonus.

    • HelenB says:

I love cucumber water! I buy them on sale, wash, slice, and freeze the slices in a Ziploc bag. Each morning, I grab my favorite water bottle, throw a few slices and some ice cubes in it, top up with water, and refill during the day at the Subway that has free filtered water. I sometimes add lemon, lime, or even blueberries.

  30. Vicki A. says:

This has all been so beneficial to me. Some of my co-workers are drinking this so I decided to try it since I’m having so many digestive problems and just after two weeks I and my husband have seen such a big difference in my energy level and over all feeling. I also started using 2 tbs. apple cider vinegar in a glass of juice every day. Thank you to everyone!

  31. peaches says:

I work with a coworker who happens to be from India who drinks this cucumber and lemon water everyday. His wife does as well. They both have managed their weight loss, drinking this water along with other natural herbal remedies. He also told me about using ginger which has helped my inflammation.. turmeric is next. All natural, cant hurt. To each is own., but I would never tear something positive down to something negative for people who need an extra push. We are all not perfect.

  32. shannon says:

this is a pile of shite, it doesnt work at all so stop bulshitting!!!!!

    • Lynn says:

      Yikes. Try again.

    • Dione says:

Please try again!!! Loose some of the stress, and do try again.

    • mike says:

Sorry it does not work for you. I love it, my whole family loves it and we all feel the benefits. We have all drank tons of water for years, but adding the lemon and cucumber its more delicious and overall feeling good doing it. And by the way I think all on here would agree you do shiiite better when drinking this way consistently, good luck and maybe smile more, frown less, life is too short for negativity. Peace

I first tried this at a nice hotel and loved it! They had a huge three gallon jug out for the guests. I came home and bought two refrigerator slide in narrow gallon containers, one for lemon slices and another for cucumber slices. I just drink away on both through the day. I would say they last me about 4 days each. Each has a lot of flavor and the ingredients are holding up. I wonder if 4 days is too long, before making a new batch.

  38. Dennis says:

You guys hilarious with your “imaginary miracle cures”!
News flash! YES, you get minerals and vitamins from a few slices soaked in water. Not as much s eating the product itself!
Losing weight? It’s NOT coming from the stuff you put in the water, it’s THE WATER!

Most people just don’t drink enough of it daily. Hence the weight packs on and never gets flushed out properly.
I had some pounds of my own to lose. I ditched sodas and everything else. Started drinking ONLY bottled water for an entire summer. SURPRISE! I lost a bunch of weight I couldn’t even begin to burn prior years.
No miracle veggy, no miracle fruits, NO WEIRD IDEAS OF PUTTING ANYTHING IN MY WATER!
    … nope! Just plain water!
Do I exercise? Not even a little! I walk daily, about 6000 steps (cell phone step counter).

    Enjoy your cucumber concoctions peeps!

As I read through the positive as well as the negative comments, I am encouraged, even inspired to drink more water again. I am supposed to drink a lot of water daily, due to health condition and have been faithful at it for years, but plain water has become boring. And to purchased flavored water is not an option for me. This sounds inspiring and I will pursue trying some of these suggestions. It is not about losing weight for me, although I would be happy with that! It is about what I need to keep doing to stay healthy while taking the prescription medicine! So, to address those with negative comments and opinions: it is not always that cut and dry. My life doesn’t fit anyone’s cookie cutter!
